The recipient of the Helensville District Health Trust's scholarship for 2020 is looking forward to a career in social work.
Trustee Bridget Leonard presented the $2000 scholarship to Gemma MacGillycuddy at the Kaipara College Year 13 Prizegiving last week.
She says in her application and interview Gemma showed a clear passion for the health of her community, with a particularly strong desire to contribute to youth mental health wellbeing.
"I'm excited to start my studies at the University of Auckland next year," says Gemma. "I hope to tackle social inequality and create long-lasting positive impact on the hauora and wellbeing of people and their families."
The Health Trust's annual scholarship aims to support a Kaipara College student who is looking at a career in health.
"We hope by supporting our future doctors, nurses and social workers we are supporting those who will champion for rural health needs in the future," says Bridget Leonard.
Gemma has secured a place in the accommodation halls and says she's excited to get a taste and feel for student life next year.
"I am so grateful to be honoured with the Helensville District Health Trust’s scholarship," she says, "it will have a significant impact towards my tuition fees and relieve a bit of stress."
